Winter Snow Tips

As the snow begins to build up it is a good idea to keep your Winter home maintenance up! Below are a few helpful tips in preparing for more snow.

  • Remove snow from your gutters. Great tools to aid in this process can be found at Tum A Lum Lumber to prevent ice damming.
  • Make sure all of your hoses are disconnected and no outside water is connected or on.
  • Keep all of your condensation lines and HVAC equipment free of snow and prevent freezing. Any lines that freeze can prevent the unit from working.
  • It is a good idea to remove snow 5-8′ around your house so when it melts the water is not building up around your foundation.
  • It is also a good idea to remove snow around fire hydrants. If ever needed it is important emergency personnel can find it quickly.
  • If you have a shallow pitch roof it is important with large accumulations of snow to remove snow to prevent extra weight as well as ice damming.
  • Keep some supplies handy if you need to lay low for a few days.

We hope you all enjoy the snow and have a safe and fun time with your families!

Energy Trust of Oregon Visits!

Thank you Energy Trust Oregon for touring two of our homes in our Gilbert Neighborhood, Hood River, Oregon. The Gilbert Neighborhood homes are special, all designed to be energy efficient and have an EPS score.  The EPS score is a way of measuring how energy efficient is the home. The houses in Gilbert make-up the first neighborhood in Hood River, Oregon to to all have an EPS rating! If you haven’t heard of the Energy Trust of Oregon, head to their website to learn more about their mission of helping homeowners and the building industry work towards being more “green” or energy efficient or even net-zero.  There are many ways Curtis Homes builds mindfully and energy conscious. Some techniques are hidden once the home is finished, and some of the methods are visible in daily use of the finished home.  Two examples, are wrapping a home in an outer insulation called a thermo sheathing, which gets siding on top of it, but works hard for the home keeping in warmth or cold AC air. In contrast to the unseen energy updates, inside the whole house is fitted with LED lighting on dimmers and a plethora of well placed windows for natural light.

New Rustic Style Home

Curtis Homes built a rustic style home in White Salmon, Washington.  The home features impressive wood beams, a re-claimed barnwood wainscoting in the main living areas and wood accents wrapping the exterior of the home!  Builder Cameron Curtis commented, “the home is a one-level with wood accents that turn-up the character and style of this beautiful house.”   The built-in hutch and shelving continue to add to the character of this home build.

Tour a New Home

Houzz is a great tool for homeowners, future-homeowners, remodelers, builders and inspiration for the dreamers!  Take a tour of the inside of recent home we finished in Bend.  It was on the Central Oregon Builder Associations tour of homes this summer.

The home overlooks Northwest Crossing’s Discovery Park in Bend, Oregon. The views of the living room are of the courtyard and pond in Discovery Park. The interior of the home invites in the Central Oregon light, vistas, and natural beauty. The home was designed to always have a useable outdoor space that is protected from the winter elements or shaded from the hot summer sun. The goal of the kitchen was to be the center of the party- if you’re in the kitchen you still can see what is happening out on the courtyard or in the living room.

Winterizing A Home

Before another winter of sub-freezing temperatures and snow, prepare your home.  Below is a list of things that might help protect or make your home more efficient in the light of the cold weather.  Every home is unique with different challenges, so these are suggestions to help you prepare for winter:

  • Change the filter in your furnace.
  • Set the thermostat to a consistent temperature to ease up on heating or cooling to an extreme: saving on your electric bill.  Now is a great time to look into a thermostat upgrade if needed.
  • Clean gutters, before the hard rains come and it is unsafe to be on a ladder.
  • Give your roof a glance, check for anything amiss.
  • Winterize lawn irrigation/ put away lawn and gardening supplies.
  • Trim up trees with low branches.
  • Clear debris, such as leaves from away from your house and home vents.
  • Walk-around your house both inside and out to take inventor of your home’s windows, doors, and vents.  Look for places letting in a draft that could be sealed.
  • If you have questions or concerns call for a tune-up or maintenance.

Hood River Home Finished!

This modern-prairie style home was  a fun project for us (Emily and Cameron), because we chose the finishes for the large three-story home.  The vision for the house was to create a sleek, modern space and to highlight the beautiful symmetry in the home!  The 2,500+ sq ft house has four bedrooms, three and half baths and open main-level living.  The home is warm, thank you warm-toned wood floors, and the full of natural light, thank you Ply Gem upper windows.
